Redbrick folds, Fading Suns reverts to IP owners, FASA?

Post by Lars Porsenna »

http://redbrickllc.com/forums/viewtopic ... 5534#p5534

So the gist is this:

Holistic Designs is the owner of the IP for Fading Suns. They decided to get out of direct publishing as the owners are also staff writers for the White Wolf lines (Vampire, Werewolf, etc). They licensed the IP to Redbrick to continue the tabletop game, and obviously licensed Noble Armada to Mongoose.

Redbrick has decided to close up shop, and the IPs are thus reverting back to the owners. This means that games like Earthdawn are back in the hands of FASA (which never actually folded, existing as a holding company and IP licensing concern for their properties). But the big surprise? FASA has picked up the license for the RPG! So does this mean FASA is coming back into the RPG/Gaming world? Announcement is coming soon, but the news broke when Redbrick apparently was seen sharing a booth with FASA (which of course hasn't been active in the gaming community for over 12 years...). Apparently FASA will have a press release in the near future. Now I'm off to the CBT boards and see what else I can dig up!

Soooo, does that mean that the spiffy ships that are all listed as 'Late' on the Mongoose boards are never coming? :(
Another daring escape for the intrepid Spaceman Spiff!

Looking on the Mongoose Forums. So far, the FASA version of Noble Armada appears to be using some of the Mongoose designs. The Redbrick posting did say "business as usual." Will continue to hunt down info...

Here is the obligiatory thread on RPG.net: http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?643 ... publishing

Might be able to glean something from this. Or if not, be entertained by the frothing bloody waters...

I have to admit I have very mixed feelings here. Redbrick was pretty much going nowhere with the FS RPG rules, canning their chief writer and "going for a new direction" after years of delay on 3e and only months until their promised Gencon release. They hit the release, but the edition they released was more a tweak rather than an overhaul. So them losing the property is not much of an impact for a line that was going nowhere...

But the name FASA evokes a lot of happy memories from my early days of gaming: the Star Trek RPG (and ship combat simulator), Dr Who RPG, and of course Battletech. Hopefully the personalities in charge of neo-FASA are wiser and more detail oriented then they were back in the old days!

As far as how this impacts ACTA, we'll have to wait and see. My feeling is that it will be business as normal, but with these sort of things, you can never know the full impact of change, how the new IP owners may feel about the universe and the direction, and especially since they are doing a new edition of NA, how they will view the ACTA version.

So what this actually looks like is a "transfer of properties" between one company to another, both of which are owned by the same person. So in all likelihood Holistic Designs retains IP, licenses progress as they would otherwise, and this may just be unintentional FUD...
