Quick Note about Reaper Bones

Post by Lars Porsenna »

For those of you getting Reaper Bones (i.e. George and Tom, to my knowledge), I was playing around with them tonight, and found that a light primer coat using thinned (around 50% gesso) works pretty well, in fact surprisingly well so far. I wouldn't use unthinned gesso (wa-ay too thick; part of the point of gesso is to reduce the texture from canvass, besides providing a tooth for paint and preventing the canvas from rotting from oil paints), but thinned out works pretty well so far!

Why would you do this to begin with? For me it is so I can use the same painting techniques I use on conventional metal or injection molded plastic figures.

I've also used plain flat black acrylic paint (i.e. Testors Acryl flat black) as well as painting on bare plastic. The latter is possible, but IMHO a bit more frustrating as you have to paint a little "thicker" than what I would like, or the paint beads up.

FYI,

Yeah, I have painted 3 or 4 of the initial Bones release minis. While the whole "doesn't need to be primed" claim is technically true, why bother taking the chance that your paint job will slough/chip off in a year? Every mini is an investment for me of time and - dare i say love and creativity? - so priming is part of my process. I usually use Duplicolor Sandable automotive primer for a low-cost suuuper smooth finish and haven't had a problem to date, but I like the idea of mixing mediums. I'll get around to using Gesso one of these days.

Wanted to add I'm getting a bit excited for when the kickstarter minis hit the shelves. I was looking over it again, and while I don't think I would have pledged (the Vampire level, FREX, had a lot of figures I didn't care for, though I suppose I could've just ebayed the ones I didn't like...) but more importantly they're releasing Deathsleet and Ebonwraith in plastic! I have Deathsleet, and it is one HUGE chunk of metal. In plastic not only will it be much cheaper, but far more practical! Something to airbrush though, rather than handpaint... :)

Also looking at the female Storm giant too!

I hear you...lots of minis that weren't included in Vampire pledge look stellar. I didn't buy any "add-ons", having already dropped $100 on non-instant gratification minis. I wanted to see how they turned out before going for any of the big-uns.

According to my twitter-feed, boxes of the Reaper Bones minis from the kickstarter have started to arrive. Those of you who got any, please post about the wonders you've received when you do in fact receive them. :)

I didn't buy into the kickstarter, I am waiting for some of the new minis to go live on the website. Particularly the big dragons. I have one in metal, and it is completely impractical -- it will never leave the house. But in bones vinyl material...

So some of the kickstarter Bones are showing up on the Reaper website. I picked up Ebonwrath and the Shadow Dragon (at huge discounts compared to the metal versions!) and a gibbering mouther analouge. Can't wait for the dragons to show up. Now if/when we play PF or D&D Next, I'll have some more dragons ready to go... :)

Bones order arrived today. For the record I picked up:

77114: Faceless Horror: http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/B ... down/77114

77108: Shadow Dragon: http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/B ... down/77108

77102: Ebonwrath, Dragon: http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/B ... down/77102

So far really impressed with the progress Reaper is making with these! Great detail, and for Ebonwrath, the metal version costs $69.99, compared to $19.99, almost makes no sense in buying the metal version anymore. My only concern is gluing the wings; while superglue has worked great for smaller pieces, the wings are much larger and more flexible.

If you're worried about the wings, pin those suckers. I don't think they're going anywhere if you utilize a bit of paperclip here and there. My concern with Bones is flash. Trying to trim or file flash in tight quarters on flexible plastic is not easy. Interested to know if anyone finds a decent workaround.

I've just been using my hobby knife to slice it away.
