Wow, the interwebs have gone absolutely nuts over this trailer.

I must say, and I hate being that guy, but I was so totally underwhelmed by that trailer. If it is supposed to be a teaser, well, there wasn't much tease there.

For me, it felt very much like "been there, done that". I mean, Tatooine, again? It seemed to me just to be more young kid on a speeder on a sandy planet, pursued by stormtroopers, maybe a good guy in stormtrooper armor again, x-wings flying around, escaping from tie fighters in the falcon, etc. I mean, haven't we seen that movie a few times already?

The only thing that really excited me was the red lightsabre. And, not because of the crossguards, but because it was all arcing and jumping as if it was barely controlled. The idea that whoever that was built the lightsabre by him/her-self without a master or an order to teach them, and maybe just barely understanding the force enough to construct it, but not make it as serene a blade as the sabres from the past - well, that's an idea I like.

And, yes, I could be reading into that a bit. And yes, it could just be showing his "fire-y Sith rage". But honestly, that would feel like a re-tread to me again. We've done that Jedi-Sith thing so much.

It won't be, but at least until they show us more I can hope this is heading towards a new tradition.

At the very least, at least they didn't show us Han, Luke, or Leia - The more we get of them before the film comes out, the more my excitement will continue to drop.

All that said, there is still a part of me that is the eternal 6 year old watching Star Wars at the drive-in and wanting to be a part of that universe - I am happy there will be more, but the adult in me is ready for new stories.

I loved it. The X-Wings in flight over the lake? Awesome. The Star Wars overture as the Millennium Falcon soared overhead? Awesome. The stormtroopers flying into who-knows-what? Very ... interesting. Red lightsaber, pulsing with power, it's wielder stumbling into ... what exactly? Also interesting. It's too little to do more than make wild assumptions about the plot, but as Jon said, I like the idea of this individual stumbling across the secrets of the force and assembling a haphazard lightsaber. And I like the idea that the Imperial Remnants might be very worried about this person...

All in all, it was better than I'd hoped, but I'm allowing my inner fanboy to run amok. Also ... I've been watching Star Wars all day while setting up the geek tree, so I'm kinda in that mind set.

The best part though, was watching it with the kids. StarGirl said "Wow ... this must be what it was like for you to watch Star Wars when you were a kid." I asked her why, and she said "Well, the prequels where ok ... but this looks like Star Wars. Real Star Wars." I'm paraphrasing of course; she's in middle school so there were a lot more "likes" in her version. :)

Agree with Ken. Especially about the X-wings and Falcon. Falcon shot indeed was very awesome, real sense of dizzying movement. Will probably look spectacular on a big screen.

But this is a teaser trailer, meant to whet the appetite but not start feeding you the plot hooks. Speculation: the fact that the teaser did NOT feature the old cast, but the new cast instead I think says more about the direction of the movie than not...

I don't know. I just don't know what to think about the new SW. My first and largest concern is that JJ Abrams doesn't have a good handle on meaningful plots. He often does a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing, both in TV and movies. So if there's some compelling reason for the Falcon and XWings to be flying around in atmosphere, then fine. If the whole movie is a stupid macguffin, then bleh.

And meaning doesn't seem like it should be THAT difficult. For god's sake, you get plenty of meaning in the 3 Old Republic teaser videos (which I've just rewatched here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPdJdEFilaU).

Prediction: Luke Skywalker is the MacGuffin (or some Force-related artifact) but that's ok because all JJ has to do is setup Episodes VIII and IX. As long as there's enough there to jump start the story, I think he'll be ok -- he's great at *starting* the story and setting the tone (see LOST, Alias) just not so good at you know ... finishing it.

I guess. But if he creates some horrible macguffin in the first movie, then someone has to assign meaning to it by movie 2 or 3. I hope it's better than that, I really do, and I'm certainly not saying that it can't happen. But we'll see.
