So what happened? Inquiring new dads want to know.

We headed up to the mine's below the City in the Stark Mounds on request of the Duke. There we found a potential way into the deep. However they left us a Ravist (?) as a guard, and collapsed the tunnel behind them. So finding a dead end (litterally) we pushed on to contact the gnomes/dwarves. After passing up a fight with a giant, we passed the ruined gnomish town and headed twards the dwarves. We found some new tracks leading us to belive we were only a day behind a contingent of the retreating army. Planning to attack the next day we bedded down for the night at the headwaters. During the night we spotted some stragglers from the army. Turned out to be the commander and his contingent who we took down with a peppering of arrows. In the morning we plan to send word back to the Duke, and see what we can do about that retreating army. Then on to the Dwarven holds.

To be accurate, the commander was mauled...by a BEAR!

BTW, IIRC the commander was a Primarch...

yes, pretty much what Cory described: we were tasked with finding out how the Horned society army got to Gorna undertected, make contact with the gnomish and dwarven clans who have been unheared from recently, and escort a maligari knight so he could learn about that strange spellcaster who really shellaced the party in hochoch.

We started by treking to the local unused mines, and found a passage, that contained a deliberate collapse, and a rehmoraz guardian. after a tough fight, we killed the creature, and decided this was how they must have brought large forces so close. We pressed on, found a ruined gnomish city (ruined in the giant invasion), with fresh tracks of a cyclops, we wanted to give chase on principle, but as it was not our current mission, we pressed on. We tracked parts of the fleeing army, camped, and did encounter and kill the army commander (the horned society primarch) and his cleric and warlock(?) henchmen, as well as a host of mooks.

We now need to get word to the Duke, and follow the larger contingent of the army we tracked, as they are headed deeper towards the dwarven clans we are investigating.

Very fun night, with everyone well involved - more oath bow hijinks, gnome druid going all spellcastery and bear form for the mauling glory stealing kill, rain of deadly arrows (strike plan alpha!), etc. :)

Strike plan 2-alpha.

1-alpha includes fire.

*Journal of Gorian, Primarch Asdeus: this journal is crudely written, obviously by someone who is poorly educated and is attempting to sound smarter than he is, generally self-agrandizing. It is undated, but probably begins 10 years ago judging by the condition of the outer cover and some initial references (it begins speaking of the Blood Moon Festival coup of the Horned Society by Iuz in CY582). The author was apparently a captain within the Horned Society army at that time, and fled to the Fellreev Forest with the only known surviving Hierarch, Nezmajen. It talks of guerilla strikes against Iuz, and of making a pact with the "dark ones beneath" to receive safe passage in return for intel from the surface. It mentions towards the end of him being sent to lead a force to the western lands beneath the high mountains to meet with an old apprentice of Nezmajen, who has apparently now one of the new Hierarchs. It mentions a new fastness for the Horned Ones at Mount Grimald, a mountain known to overlook a pass on the road between Urtcheck and Deepholme, the two dwarven clans who have been incommunicado since the giant invasion 8 years ago.

We will definitely have to remember the strategy. While the hail of arrows were damaging and well-placed, I believe the druid's spike growth and tremor spells slowed down the troops a lot. The blessed aim but more of the recitation were helpful as well.

Maybe before the next game, we can develop melee tactics for the next ambush.

Melee strikes only work when we have The Mountain!

Also when he's back he can tell us more about these so called "warlocks" since the gnome' info is kind of lacking.
