Kalib Conversion

Post by EvilGenius »

Converting Kalib was, predictably, not easy. Kalib started his gaming career as a fighter, then dual classed to a cleric. When we converted to 3rd, I really should have replaced the few fighter levels with ranger to better reflect his pursuit of vengeance stuff, but I kept the fighter levels for a more literal update.

For 5th, I'm still going with fighter, but over the course of play Kalib had a pretty awesome prestige class (Contemplative) and had several feats that allowed him to spend Turn Attempts to power Divine abilities. In 5e, I think that actually maps very well to Paladin with the Oath of Vengeance. Sooo, beHOLD!

Jeez, our starting stats were only 82 points combined for 2E, so that's 21 points worth of stat bumps?

Exceptional strength converted like this:

Exceptional Score New Strength Score
18/01–18/50 --- 19
18/51–18/75 --- 20
18/76 –18/90 --- 21
18/91–18/99 --- 22
18/00 --- 23
19–20 --- 24
21–22 --- 25
22–23 --- 26
24–25 --- 27

Hmm, lemme check.

Ok, I have to adjust a little. Some of Kalib's stats reflect bumps from magical items which I have to take out for 5e. Some were from Stat bumps. I'm pretty sure that Kalib rolled stats at the table at my first game (that's how he ended up with an 18 Comliness).

So his base stats according to my 3e character sheet are these:
Str 14
Dex 16
Con 10
Int 14
Wis 21
Chr 16

He had an Amulet of Health +4 which gave me the 14 Con, and he had a +4 Chr bonus from his Breastplate. The 21 Wisdom was from stat bumps (I know every time I got a stat bump I chose Wisdom), but in 5e the cap is 20.

So, I'm not sure how to translate the stat bump items into 5e. The Amulet of Health would probably just be the 5e version of the Amulet (set Con to 19 unless it's already higher). But the property of the Breastplate has no direct analogue (there are no items that set Dex, Wisdom or Charisma to 19, or give them a numeric boost).

I think this part may pertain to Luc, not Kalib. :)

Under 2e, Luc had an 18/50-something Str and I think a 19 Con. Under 3x, he increased Charisma a few times (to get out of the penalty range), and also Int (for skillz) and Con. Dex was always 10 and Wisdom became 14 in 3e, with the dwarven stat bonuses to Con and Wisdom.

Were these stat bumps from some source other than leveling?

I was attempting to convert Ragnar, and what I did was scrub the stats back to the natural "1st level" values, then adjusted up after bumps from race and leveling using 5E rules, so here's what I have pre-magic item boosts (which for Ragnar would be from the Sword of Kane)

Under Ken's 2E 82 point buy, 18/00 cost 20 points, so I put the 2 extra points into Int for 5E

2E-->5E
20-----18 (19 variant human, 20 at 4th level)
18-----18
18-----18 (19 variant human, 20 at 4th level)
-7------9
11-----11 (12 at 16th level)
-8------8
82------82

Also, in 5E you don't "need" super-high stats because there isn't the massive arms race of AC, DC's, and Saves... everything is flatter.

Nope. I think Kalib started (or converted to 3e) with a base 16. 5 bumps later = 21.

With 5 feats he wouldn't have given up all his stat bumps?

I'm really just curious how everyone is doing things. I am thinking of just re-building Rex from the ground up stats and all. I'm sure get him close enough. Of course it's easy for me as Rex has only been around for half the time characters like Kalib have. Plus he started at level 11 or 12.

I didn't rebuild Kalib from the ground up for 5e, I brought over his stats from 3e. The stat bumps I was referring to were the 3e stat bumps. If everyone is just dumping our original stats and rebuilding under 5e guidelines, then I can do that. We hadn't done that from 2e to 3e, so I didn't for 5e.

What does everyone else think? For conversions, do we just want to use straight 5e stat guidelines from 1st level?

I was planning on "backdating" my character's stats to what they would have been at 1st level, then doing/determining stat bumps and feats from there. So not a complete rebuild.

BTW, what are people using to build their characters? I see Bob keeps posting stats so I'm assuming he is using software or a spreadsheet?

I use this (v1.64) http://www.enworld.org/forum/rpgdownloa ... oadid=1234

I think converting from 2E-->3E-->5E results in stats that are too inflated, because both 3E and 5E had stat bumps built in, that's why I retrograded to the "original" 1st level stats and built the character back up from there, just making class and archtype adjustments to fit the overall theme of the original character.

Killian, Tanevir, and Ragnar were all created in 2E under the 82 point buy system (which was one for one), so that's what I reverted to for the starting point.

Other characters I have used our 3E 30 point buy system (with the progressive point costs the higher you went), or were rolled randomly (like Villarom).
