SW TOR Transfers

Post by EvilGenius »

So we can do a free transfer of characters from the Mind Trick server to another server (the destination server is set, we don't get to choose). I'm seriously considering it. Damon, are you going to transfer?

Hmm, my account is deactivated - I suppose they won't let me do it while it's sleeping - grr.

I haven't really thought of it Bob. What would be the advantage? Since the initial excutement is over, Mind Trick hasn't been as packed as it used to be...

Damon, that exactly why they're doing the server transfers. There are still millions of people playing the game, but they have so many servers active that the population is spread thin. The server transfers will consolidate the player base on fewer servers.

The advantage of that is that there will be people playing the game when you are, where you are. There will be people to do quests with. There will be items on the auction house. You might have people in your guild who are on at the same time. It should just make things easier, overall.

Damon, I moved to Corellian Run. There is only one server that we're allowed to move to right now (because they're trying to consolodate servers).

Yeah, so I have no idea how to switch servers.

Also I saw Corellian Run is listed as "very heavy" user traffic. Not so sure about this Bob...

"Very Heavy" traffic is exactly the idea, Damon. This isn't a single player game. You actually need other players to farm crafting materials, buy your excess crap and to team up on missions. Later on in the game there are PVP scenarios to play and larger scale flashpoints, like the Esseles flashpoint. When there are less then 10 characters on the Republic Space Station at 9pm EST on Friday night, you simply don't have as many options, as a player.

Regarding HOW to switch servers, you have to do that from the SW:TOR website, not from the game itself. You log into the website with your game account and look for the instructions.

I'll add you. Kalib had to be changed too. I'll get the correct spelling for you.

I'm transferring my characters now. Even though it says that you have to have an active account, it seems to still be working with my inactive account. Fingers crossed...

According to my account info, yes. Of course, since I don't have an active account, i can't log in to verify. Per the char xfer instructions, one needs an active account in order to do the transfer. But, it appeared to work for me - all my chars appear under Corellian Run. We shall see at the point where I re-up.

FYI, Bioware announced that they are adding a "free-to-play" option to TOR in a month or so, so Zack and I will probably be playing again shortly.

EA hasn't announced the particulars yet, but play to lvl 50 will be free "with some restrictions". There will be some type of currency that players buy to allow them access to these restricted areas/features. Regardless, as long as I'm paying a fair fee for the amount of game time I'm enjoying, we'll be back in.

For interested newcomers, the game itself will go on sale for $15 very soon.

Sounds like even WoW is feeling this subscription crunch - they lost a million players over a 3 month period last fiscal year. My guess is that Blizzard will follow suit eventually. I don't think subscription-based MMOs will be viable going forward.
