Aftermath: Ostscout Reposession Caper

Post by Lars Porsenna »

As the last mech clambers on board the Bun-bun, Jack gives the order and the dropship burns off the planet's surface. "Since we're a Lyran registered ship, shouldn't be any "entanglements" with the locals," he says. "That Leager dropper however just kicked over a hornet's nest."

Bun-bun makes for a leisurely burn to the jumppoint, pulling a standard 1g. "So I see you got the mech and recruited a pilot? Well the latter is your business, but the former belongs to me," he says. "It's a good thing too; losing that Jenner is gonna cost. Not gonna be a lot of profit for this one. And Bolan was mostly settled by Pakistanis -- Muslims -- so ain't a decent drop of booze anywhere, except the black market and offworlder cantons. Ahh..."

"Hey Jack -- I can't help but notice that you've got some multiplication errors in your report. You list the value of the 'asset' recovered at 3,416,760, but I seem to remember you saying that Ostscouts were so rare that 'they sell regularly at perhaps 3 times the normal cost for a mech of this size." Now I may be just a simple mech pilot, but it seems to me that asset should be valued at considerably higher than 3.5 mil. I'm thinking 9 mil sounds about right, which more than pays for that piece of crap Jenner you sent me out in."

"So what's the deal Jack?"

"Hey, I get my cut, the jumpship captain gets his cut, and we have to keep some in the kitty to buy a new mech. We made some money on this run, no doubt about it. And someone gets a slightly used mech that hasn't been produced in something like 170 years. It's all good..."

"Jack -- we're talking about 9 *million* creds here. Even allowing for $3.5 mil for a new Jenner -- with better armor -- that still leaves you with what, 5.5 MILLION credits. So what, your cut and the captain's cut was 2.75 mil? Granted that'll buy a hell of a lot of wine coolers, but it seems like the guys who actually *did* the work are getting the shaft." -- Nigel

Perception: 8+8 = 16

"You know Jack, there are other ways to settle this little ... disagreement ... we're having. Like say, shares in the company? I think the boys and I have show we can pull our weight AND save your bacon. Save a few mil for wine coolers ... and give us partial ownership of your operation."

What's Sense Motive in the SWSE system? Lenny has Perception +7 and Deception +6.

Deception: 5+1 = 6

"What? I supply the ship, the mechs, and most of the risk, and you want to be shareholders in the company? Hah! If it wasn't for me you bunch would still be wiping up spit at some hole on Galatea, just hoping a real mechwarrior would give you the honor -- or have the pity -- to glance in your general direction! So what do you say to that?" he finishes with a loud belch.

"Whoa, whatya mean? I'm on the straight and level, see? Heh heh..." looks around nerviously.

Bluff: 6 + 2 = 8

"Hey now, easy there big guy," Jack says, trying to deflect any trouble. "No need for violence here. I'm a pacifist at heart...I hate violence...

"Well, OK maybe that latter part is a lie, but no need to start hitting stuff (like me)...

"Truth is, there are no 'shares' to divide up. Sole proprietor. I own the ship. The jumpship is by contract, of course, and I give them a generous share. Dude also finds a market for our...reposessed...goods, so he gets his cut. So are you guys saying the market rate for a mechjock isn't enough for you. Where else are you gonna go?"

OOC: Damon, I'm Nigel's making a Knowledge: Galactic Lore check (11+7 = 18) and casting his mind back to try and remember stories about ol'Smile'n Jack here. Specifically I'm trying to remember mechwarriors who've worked with him before ... and tales they've told.

Given his drinking habit and his tendency toward friendly fire, I'm guessing it's damn hard for him to keep a consistent (and capable) crew.

OOC: You can't remember much specifically, but you do remember some stories about a hard drinking pirate captain, operating out on the periphery, that sometimes posed as a legitimate business effort.

Nigel looks at Jack thoughtfully, then speaks. "See, here's the problem. You're thinking us as "mech jocks" when the word you should be using is "partners".

You see, you have the ship ... but we've got the talent. Hell, even with you shooting at us we still pulled off that first caper. And now this one? You send us out in scrap-metal Jenners and we still come away with the prize and a new pilot.

And not just any prize, but a 9 million credit prize. A prize you couldn't have gotten without us. I'm thinking it's about time "we" started re-investing in the team ... partner."
