Aftermath: Ostscout Reposession Caper
Re: Aftermath: Ostscout Reposession Caper
"Alright everyone," Nigel says, holstering his gun. "I know you've got questions, and we're gonna get some answers. Let's get all section chiefs together in 30. In the meantime, let's look lively. Jack may be down, but I doubt he's out. I wouldn't be surprised if he tried to sic system security on us, so let's make sure we're ship shape. And someone see if Christophos is still around, or if Jack really did space him."
"Don't worry folks, things are going to get better. I promise you that.". Nigel jumps on the bridge comm channel. "Duty officer, this is Nigel. Captain Jack has decided to resign his position. The ship's under new management; I want a meeting of section chiefs in 30."
OOC: Assuming people listen, and we have a moment to collect our wits, I suggest we chat quick about what happens next.

Re: Aftermath: Ostscout Reposession Caper
Ok, so we have a ship, we have mechs, and we can do whatever we want.
As my sig says ... let's be bad guys. Nigel has no problems with being a pirate, it's just working for Jack that was bothering him. Nigel's more interested in the Mal Reynold's school of piracy -- steal from the rich, give to himself, rather than knocking over hardscrapple colony worlds.
But that's later. To start, I think we sell the Ostscout ... and the information we acquired. We should check Jack's computer records to see if there's any reference to who his contact was for buying the Ostscout (we might want to sell it to them, particularly if they'll be super-pissed off if we sell it to someone else ... and have the weapons to do something about it).
Then we should look into acquiring a new mech, getting some upgrades for the existing ones, all while making sure that the crew gets a healthy bonus from the caper.
After that, we should start looking for mercenary (or other, less reputable) jobs.

Lenny is trying to find Walker in the confusion for help in chasing down Nigel's whereabouts. Don't want Nigel setting the reactor core to "self destruct" or something, before he makes his presumed getaway.

Err. Nigel's right here (that'd be me. ) Jack's the one to worry about, and IIRC, he already escaped.erilar wrote:Lenny is trying to find Walker in the confusion for help in chasing down Nigel's whereabouts. OOC: Battletech uses fusion reactors as the top-of-the-tech-pyramid power source, so I'm not sure you could set a reactor on self-destuct. You might be able to vent plasma into the engineering compartment and start a fire (and if the ship is not under accelleration, that is doubly dangerous in 0g). But yes, Jack is long gone and (at this point, probably hasn't been a full day) decelerating back towards Bolan.erilar wrote:Lenny is trying to find Walker in the confusion for help in chasing down Nigel's whereabouts. So there are rigid safety parameters that keep one from overloading the reactor, but venting plasma into the engineering compartment is a no-brainer? OSHA must have missed that on their last inspection. Are we really going to argue about a technology that doesn't exist yet? (Besides, this is scifi - if there's a reactor, there is a self-destruct sequence...)

If there's a reactor, there must be an overload threat. And if there's an overload threat, there must be an core ejection sequence. And if you have an ejection sequence, it absolutely, positively won't work when you need it to. Unless you're onboard Voyager.erilar wrote:So there are rigid safety parameters that keep one from overloading the reactor, but venting plasma into the engineering compartment is a no-brainer? The technology does exist of course; there has been a lot of experimentation towards it. And overloading the reactor is AFAIK less an issue of saftety requirements, and more a matter of physics: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusion_pow ... nvironmenterilar wrote:So there are rigid safety parameters that keep one from overloading the reactor, but venting plasma into the engineering compartment is a no-brainer? But I actually like science. If I was 20yrs younger and better at math, I would have studied to be a physicist. Space.com is a daily stop for me, and I find it depressing that science news reporting has dropped off in volume and quality at CNN.com and BBC.co.uk...NukeHavoc wrote:Oh sure, go ahead and bring science into the debate...Lars Porsenna wrote:The technology does exist of course; there has been a lot of experimentation towards it. Re: Aftermath: Ostscout Reposession Caper
Okay, it looks like fusion would theoretically not have much danger of an explosion. Still, I'm sure there are still ways we could get something to go kerplooey. Tell the reactor to make 3 times the power we actually need, or something like that. The first thing humans usually use new tech for is to kill people with it - the difficult thing is finding a socially responsible application...
But fusion is not practically employed in 2011 - that's what I meant. Yes, it is possible, but we're nowhere near current viability:

Hey, did someone change the channel on this TV? Here I was watching Andromeda, and now it looks like How It's Made is on...

In any case, the point is that the ship is secure. Damon hand waved away the captains escape so we control the ship (for now).
Another daring escape for the intrepid Spaceman Spiff!
