The PCs rested for the night, setting Alizar to watch over Dapple, who was still tied up in the box.

After the welcome rest though, Quarion reported that his trancing had been continuously interrupted with dark visions. As a result, he was unable to rest at all (Quarion gained no benefit from either a short or long rest).

Nonetheless, the PCs requested an audience with Bern Haupt and they explained that they intended to send word to the constable and ask to meet with him. Further, they asked if Councilman Haupt would agree to allow the constable to meet them in the Grandwood; neutral ground, so to speak. The Councilman agreed and sent one of his tiefling servants off to request an audience with the Constable. The messenger was to indicate that the Constable’s safety was guaranteed and could he please come alone?

Sometime later, as the PCs contemplated Quarion’s situation, a different tiefling ran into the sitting room to report that an entire troop of guardsmen, Constable Tierny at their head, was approaching up the road!

The guard troop stopped outside and stood at attention, while Constable Tierney approached and knocked politely on the front door. One of Bern's tiefling servants opened the door and showed the Constable into the sitting room. Tierney's hard stare belied his outwardly polite presentation. "I received your ... invitation, as you can see. I'm glad you sent word. There are some things we need to talk about."

The PCs brought Tierney up to date on their findings, including all speculations about the true nature of Shining Justice, along with the evidence they had found in the form of the Journals. Tierney responded that Shining Justice came to him last night and accused the PCs of attacking them with no provocation, one of their number, Jareth, assuming some beastial form and slaying the bard Frahuel, and that Brigga had bewitched another of Shining Justice, Owan, and forced him to kill a citizen in Pef's, and then violently resist arrest.

It took some persuasion, but Quarion was able to persuade Tierney that they were not involved in those crimes and that Shining Justice attacked them with minimal provocation (Quarion shot a harried glance at Bannock).

Tierney was able to piece together a lot more information out of Frahuel's journal than Quarion was, all of which supported the PCs story. Frahuel's journal detailed Shining Justice's stay in several large towns and small cities in the Northlands, and it was apparent that what Frahuel loved most of all was starting drama. Several entries detailed how he carefully re-ignited old feuds and increased animosity between unfriendly factions. Frahuel also talked some about Farweald, toward the end of the journal. He gleefully reported that he had been able to spark several riots and assaults, all while wooing quite a few of the local townswomen.

Bannock also handed over Dapple's journal, which was written in Infernal. Tierney couldn't read the journal but said that he knew someone who could probably help. Tierney also took Elaida's journal in it's unknown language, and was confident he could get it deciphered.

After the careful diplomatic session, Tierney left with Dapple still tied up in the chest, the three journals and a promise from the PCs that they wouldn't engage members of Shining Justice in town, should they be encountered.

The PCs have recovered this loot:

These silken gloves are a dark red and shrink to fit your hand snugly, then they fade from view, leaving a small silver skeleton key tattoo on your wrist.
These gloves are invisible while worn. While wearing them, you gain a +5 bonus to Dexterity (Sleight of Hand checks and Dexterity checks made to pick locks.
Studded Leather Armor +1
(Guardian Property, Rare)
This armor is made of beautifully tanned walnut-brown leather affixed with bronze studs. As you handle the armor, the slightest movements around you seem to jump out at you.

More descriptive text as I get it. :)
