Episode 21: Farweald Frolicks ...

EvilGenius wrote:The PCs returned to the Grandwood, where Bern Haupt's tiefling servants immediately came forward to care for the PCs horses and see to their wagon. Quarion shooed the youngsters away from the wagon, not wanting them to lift the tarp covering the two deceased daughters of their host.

The PCs went in to refresh themselves and learned that Bern Haupt would be back relatively soon for dinner. Shortly, the tiefling servants could be heard greeting the Councilman and informing him of the PCs return. Bern came in to chat with the PCs who broke the news of Gwendolyn and Leigha's deaths, then took him to show him the bodies.

Bern stood looking at the two women, their family resemblance easier to see with them laid out beside each other beneath the fine blue and silver netting, studded with softly glowing moonstones.

Bern was quite distraught over his daughter's death, and thanked the PCs for bringing her home, praising their courage, certain that they had done everything possible to save his daughter, their dear adventuring companion. Wrapped in his own grief, the Councilman did not notice the guilty glances exchanged between the PCs.

Bern also thanked the PCs for bringing Councilman Lemend's daughter, Leigha, home at long last, and sent a tiefling servant to bring the news to Lemend so that Leigha could be returned to her family, too.

As the tiefling messenger ran off, Bern looked up from the women and sighed, eyes following his servant as he disappeared down the hill. "I hope the lad doesn't run into trouble on the way. Almost everyone in town has fired any tieflings who worked for them. I'm one of the only people left who employs any tieflings in any capacity. You don't see many around town now; they mostly stay in The Invisibles. There have been a few incidents in the last couple of weeks, so now guards stake out the edge of that section of town. You know, to keep townsfolk from going in there and stirring up trouble." You exchange knowing glances again, well aware that guards work both ways ....

Is Lemend's home on the way?

DM: You ask Bern Haupt about Councilor Lemend’s dwelling. Haupt says that if you hurry, you can follow the tiefling servant to his house, which is in the nice part of the northern side of town.
TOM: Onarra will catch up with the tiefling and head toward Councilor Lemend's home.
Onarra sets off from the Grandwood, striding down the moderately sloped rood toward the industrial section of Farweald. There is a fair amount of activity at the base of the hill, as people are bringing materials to the smithies and to the lumber mill further down. Try as you might, however, you don't catch sight of the tiefling lad. He had only left a few minutes before you, and there aren't any other tieflings in sight. It seems odd that you hadn't caught up to him.

You continue on toward the nicer section of town, asking a passerby where you can find Councilor Lemend's home. It takes a few tries to find someone who will speak to you (and who knows the answer to your question), but you do eventually make your way to the Councilor's home. There is no activity inside, that you can tell, and you don't see any sign of Bern Haupt's tiefling servant.

The rest of the PCs turn in to the Grandwood and prepare for a good nights sleep indoors, in comfy beds.

Jareth, when you check in with Alizar, he asks you all about your trip to the City of Brass. The efreeti and djinn are mortal enemies, so he's never been there, but has heard many horrible stories of the City, none of which your stories contradict. However, one part of your conversation does stand out; when you tell Alizar about your instructions to show an amulet to Lord Eezamm just before you killed him, Alizar looks thoughtful and asks you to describe the amulet.

You reply that you can do better than that, as you still have the amulet. You show him and Alizar immediately recoils from the object. "O Wise and Powerful Master! That is an Imprisonment Amulet! You can use it to trap genies in objects, usually as a punishment of some sort. Had you shown that amulet to this efreeti just before striking a mortal blow, he would not have been killed, but rather imprisoned in an object, which would have been prepared ahead of time."

A thought occurs to Alizar then. "Hmmm, I wonder if something like that is what imprisoned that minor efreeti into Mistress Brigga's ugly clay pot? In any case, Master, please keep that away from me. I already humbly serve you and await your every whim I do not relish being trapped in ugly mud....."

If no one responds to Onarra knocking on the door and announcing herself, and the tiefling servant doesn't show up, she will move on to skirt the Invisibles on her way out of town. She will look for any ugly interactions between guards and tieflings. If she sees nothing, she will respect the tieflings' wishes by not entering their neighborhood and continue on out of town to find shelter for the night. Little Buddy is with her.

In the morning, Brigga will ask the friends still at Haupt's place what the plan is. "Personally, I'm inclined to head to Bannock's portal at the Singing Pools. More danger. More answers."

You don't get a response at Councilor Lemend's abode, so you move on to the Invisibles. The guards are visibly shaken by the sight of Lil Buddy clomping down the street after you (as a matter of fact, everyone you've noticed has been shocked and turned away from you and Lil Buddy), and shortly, Constable Tierney shows up with Deputy Hania show up to see what the commotion is about.

Seeing that it's only you, they visibly relax and come over to speak to you. "Onarra, nice to see you back in town. Does this mean that all of the Friends are back, too? And, this looks, umm, dangerous. Is there someone in there?" You assure Tierny that Lil Buddy is just a big suit of armor that follows you around and protects you, and isn't a threat to anyone, so long as no one threatens you. The Constable still asks that you leave Lil' Buddy wherever you are staying instead of having him follow you around town and scaring the heck out of the overly superstitious townfolk, but you explain that you are heading out of town now for some much needed alone time in the forest and he nods his head in agreement.

There's nothing else happening around the Invisibles, so you head out of town by the south gate and get a pretty good night's sleep in the forest with Lil Buddy watching over you.

In the morning, Onarra will take the same return route to Haupt's, looking for guards troubling tieflings or any sign of Councilor Lemend. If nothing, she will join the 'where-to-next' discussion and support Brigga's Singing Pool initiative.

The PCs are gathered for their morning meal discussing plans and are joined by your host, Councilman Haupt. One of the many young tiefling servants approaches and whispers something urgent to Bern. The Councilman looks surprised and a little concerned, then turns to the PCs. "Ahem, noble guests! It appears that not only has Councilman Lemend not shown up to claim his dear daughter's remains, my messenger, Theodore, never returned last night after being sent to deliver the news to Lemend!

Now this isn't ... necessarily ... bad news, after all, the boy could have just gone back to visit his family in the Invisibles, I do wonder .... Harumph! I fear the social situation in this town is deteriorating. Something really MUST be done!

And Lemend! I'm quite surprised at Councilor Lemend not showing up. He's been greatly distraught over his daughter's disappearance for these last several months. Ah well, maybe the poor man's finally come undone. Terrible news. Just terrible." Bern sits back heavily in his chair, looking dejectedly at his breakfast.

Bannock will suggest that while the portals are certainly of interest, perhaps we should investigate what is up with Councillor Lemend, as the town seems to be deteriorating, and who knows what we may return to if we head out just this minute.

Yes, at this point, everyone is at the Grandwood. You are all rested and back to full strength. There will not be time for more things before the start of the next adventure.

There may be magical items to distribute from the last few adventures. I'll gather a list and post it here. You'll need to decide on attunements and spells and such. This is the "Warning: You should manually save your game, now" message. :D

Onarra will back this up by relating her experiences the previous evening:

"The boy, Theodore seems to have changed course or been taken well before I reached Councilman Lemend's home. And I received no response once arrived, which I didn't think was necessarily unusual. Perhaps an escorted messenger to (is it Akriah?) our former contact and/or at the very least, to the boy's family. If the tieflings refuse us, then we may at least determine they're not under personal threat. We can make a detour to rouse Constable Tierny (am i making these names up or do i actually remember something?) to notify him of the disappearances and possibly work with him. He may have a finger on the pulse of Farweald we've missed these several days gone."

Yes, those are the correct names for folks! Yay!

And those are fine suggestions, however, fate is about to intervene, so level up, divvy treasure, choose attunements, prepare spells and such. The adventure is upon us! ;D
