Episode 21.75: Farweald: New Dawn

Post by EvilGenius »

With all of the status changes in Farweald, we'll put the 'next steps' here in this thread.

It's been a day and a half since the big fight in the central market of Farweald. That day will henceforth be known as the Day of Fire, as most of Farweald caught fire and then was saved by the combined actions of the whole remaining town.

The other thread dealt with changes that have taken place in Farweald as a result of the Day of Fire. I'm going to repost them here, as this thread will deal with some rebuiling/realignment within town.

Based on your day of putting out fires in town, you learn the following about Farweald after the Day of Fire.

1. The Grandwood was unaffected by the explosions as it did not have any of the Unbreakable Pottery (Hravja likely knew what was making it 'unbreakable').
2. The Invisibles were unaffected by the explosions as they did not have any Unbreakable Pottery (the Potter refused to sell to them because: prejudice).
3. The Mill was mostly unaffected as they had no need of Unbreakable Pottery. The Mill did suffer some secondary fire damage from other buildings around it.
4. The Central Market was devastated by multiple explosions and then the large battle that happened there. However, Basheem's large fancy scale survived (he was the money changer and you had determined a long time ago that his ornate scale was holy to Moqul).
5. Tinker's Rest was completely ruined by many explosions, their attendant fires, and the fire creatures released from captivity. The gnomish couple who ran the inn, Gellund and Irild Hodzik, were killed.
6. Forms in Wood - Master Illorg's carpentry shop was completely destroyed by the explosions and subsequent fires. Master Illorg handily slew the a salamander who was released in his shop.
7. Pef's Place - the PCs favorite place to stay in Farweald was completely destroyed in the explosions and fires. Several fire elementals were released who also destroyed part of the wooden palisade wall next to Pef's. Pef was killed defending his inn but his daughter, Julia, survived.
8. The Buzzsaw Tavern survived handily. Known as a rougher place, it did not have any Unbreakable Pottery because the patrons enjoyed breaking things as part of the 'ambiance'. The Buzzsaw is also close to the Cold River which runs through town.
9. The Wheel Inn was heavily damaged with multiple explosions and fires but is not a complete loss.
10. Ye Old Gaming House was completely destroyed with multiple explosions and fires. Also, the Gaming House is right on the Central Market, so it suffered some damage from the big fight.
11. Lolm's Livery was heavily damaged by fire from Tinker's Rest, which was across the street from the livery. Many horses were killed, but not all.
12. Haupt's Wonders was untouched by explosion or fires. The Unbreakable Pottery was far too 'low class' and ugly to be carried at Haupt's, and the building is made of sturdy brick. So even though building around Haupt's Wonders burned to the ground, Haupt's itself appears untouched.
13. Burt's Mundanities was untouched by explosion or fire. Burt thought Unbreakable Pottery was too 'high class' for his establishment, and he could never figure out how to purchase it anyway. There aren't any other building close enough to Burt's to have threatened it with fire, but everything is a little wet and moldy anyway so it is unlikely that it would have caught fire.
14. The Town Hall was damaged but not destroyed.
15. The Farweald Jail had several explosions within it and several fire creatures were released but the jail itself appears to be fireproof somehow, so it wasn't really damaged at all.
16. Feats in Clay, the potters shop right off of the Central Market, was utterly destroyed with many explosions and burned down several buildings next to it. Many creatures were released from the Potters shop which were defeated throughout the day by the various groups trying to save the town. The Potter, who sided with the Servants of the Master, was killed in the battle.
17. Ciande's Steeds, where the PCs bought their mounts, did not suffer any explosion damage but caught fire from several buildings around it and burned to the ground. However, Ciande (an elf), with others help, was able to save all of his horses.
18. Two Birds, the fletchers, who the PCs never visited because no one uses bows, was destroyed. There were a few explosions in the store itself and heavy fire damage from the creatures released from their pottery. The two half elves who ran the shop, Raeflyn Vyndal, known as “SureShot”, and her husband, Nivendor Vyndal, known as “RapidFire”, were both killed defending their neighbors from the creatures released in that part of town. The two half elves openly used quite a bit of magic in fighting the creatures, from what you gather, both arcane and divine magic.

Disposition of various Farweald Factions:

Government - the Council of Farweald, consisting of Councilors Wetis, Bern Haupt and Lemend Pelshyn, has been completely destroyed. Councilman Haupt was revealed to be the rakshasa, Hravja, who fled the big fight.
Constable Tierney is acting as a temporary town leader until a new Council can be chosen.

The Law - Constable Tierney, Deputy Hania, and Deputy Archibald all survived. Deputy Dunaric was killed in the big battle. Most guardsmen were revealed to be in league with the Servants of The Master, though they didn't know anything about The Master, himself. They were mostly just corrupted by bribes or hatred of the tiefling population. Most of these guardsmen were either killed in the battle or in the fires. Some survived, and switched sides when they saw who they were actually aligned with, and saw the tieflings rushing to save people in the Day of Fire.

The Tieflings - The tieflings suffered some losses in the Day of Fire, but mostly among those who had pledged themselves to Thosos and the Servants of the Master. The tieflings homes in the Invisibles were completely unaffected by the explosions and fires that ravaged the rest of town, and the tieflings gave shelter to many surviving townsfolk, all of whom were completely surprised at the very existence of the tieflings burrows.
Akriah and her 'returned/revaled' sister, Beltane, are the defacto leaders of the tiefling population of Farweald.
Akriah is revealed to be romantically involved with Constable Tierney.
Beltane is revealed to be a cleric of Trithereon wielding a sword called JusticeSeeker, and is the guardian of Quirinseyru's young son, Cyvos (a silver dragon wyrmling).

The Human Population - the largest population in Farweald has seen a very difficult day. Their longstanding superstitions against magic and tieflings have been proven to be fodder for the Servants of The Master. The oppressed underclass of tieflings helped save most of the town from the fires that ravaged Farweald. All of their leaders have been killed or revealed as traitors.

The Human population in Farweald is teetering. A strong leader could greatly influence them at this moment.

Balfhe and Markle are being recognized for valor in the big battle.

The Demihuman Population - There are notable demihumans throughout Farweald. The most prominent is the dwarven population, which fared pretty well following the Day of Fire. Noridur Hammerheart was revealed to be in league with the Servants of the Master, but his children, the Hammerheart Twins, convinced him to abandon the Servants once they revealed themselves and their agenda. Noridur was killed in the fight that followed.
Gimdriss Hammerheart, never one to hold her tongue, is currently serving as a spokesperson for the dwarven population in town.
Helar'ik Hammerheart is considering rejoining the Constabulary to honor the fallen Dunaric.
Master Illorg (dwarf) is emerging as a Hero of Farweald for his role in the big battle.
Master Anmreas (elf) is also being regarded as a Hero of Farweald for his role in the big battle.
Refelyn Vyndal and Nivendor Vyndal (1/2 elf) were killed fighting creatures released from the Unbreakable Pottery.
Gellund and Irild Hodzik, (gnomes) owners and proprietors of Tinker's Rest and beloved members of the Farweald community, were tragically killed by the creatures released from all of the Unbreakable Pottery they owned. Perhaps fittingly, Tinkers Rest was also utterly destroyed.

The first issue that's come up is Constable Tierney had requested that the PCs investigate the Grandwood. You found a secret temple dedicated to fiend worship and a lot of treasure.

What do you want to do about that?

The second issue comes up now.

Constable Tierney pulls Quarion aside after the PCs come back from exploring the secret temple under the Grandwood. Tierney asks Quarion if he will consider staying on in town as they rebuild, since the herbalists were killed and the replacement herbalist turned out to be secretly poisoning everyone. Quarion has built up some goodwill in town for curing people, and even gotten some to consider that some magic is pretty beneficial and necessary.

Akriah and Beltane approach Onarra and Miette, sympathetic toward the hostage situation they found themselves in. Beltane offers to perform a magical ritual that will completely sever any magical compulsions that The Master may have lay upon them.

Julia Mathers, Pef's daughter, who ran Pef's Place (known early on as Pef's Lodge), approaches Bannock and Jareth. Julia is worried about the town's food supply. There was a modest grainery in town but it exploded in flames and burned to the ground, along with all of the stored grain. Julia asks if you would be willing to lead hunters and gatherers in the forest to rebuild their food supply with meat, fruits and vegetables.

Deputy Hania approaches Brigga and suggests that this tragedy also offers the opportunity to further show people that magic can be beneficial to the town. Hania asks if Brigga would agree to work with the Constable's Office to keep order in town, so that the people could see that the Constable trusts in magic and those that use it. Maybe in the future, Brigga would even consider becoming a Deputy?

Bannock will suggest to the party that we divide up any magic items - these we just found and any we have from previous. (see other thread.)

He will suggest that they take what they might need from the coin Hravja had horded, but maybe that the bulk should go back to the town. Perhaps some donated to a town fund for rebuilding and progress. Perhaps even a census could be taken, and the bulk of what was found redistributed evenly among the population, definitely including the tieflings.

OOC: chime in if you are ok with redistributing the wealth. Bob, do we have a count of the population? If not, Bannock would offer to help Tierny organize one.

Bannock will absolutely take up Julia on her suggestion, and he himself will also make rounds of the town, asking for able-bodied volunteers to help hunt and gather, being sure to seek out volunteers from the tiefling community as well as the general population.

He will offer to conduct lessons/give pointers and tips to any who are interested. [OOC: as he could fail in his instructions, I assume he can't take 20, but even taking 10, his Survival in a favored terrain like the forest outside of town would give him 10+13=23 on his survival checks to have the skills necessary, and a 10+1=11 on a performance check to teach or at least model the skills.] He would do this repeatedly for any who want to help.

Plus to motivate folks to help, Bannock will say that hunters/gatherers would certain get to keep their share of food first, and he would offer from his own pockets 1gp per animal or lb of fruit/vegetables donated to the town cause to each hunter/gatherer that contributes.

He will focus on small game trapping/hunting, and showing folks where to gather healthy fruits, nuts, roots, and veg in his teachings to new volunteers. He will encourage those more experienced to choose larger game if they want, but remind that the goal for the town is more along the lines of full stew pots, not necessarily steaks for all. although, if they get that, too, more reason to celebrate.

Bannock is also ok with looting anything of value from the Grandwood and ensuring that those in need in town have things they need. For example, if someone lost eating utensils in the fires, the dining rooms at the Grandwood certainly have a lot to spare, etc.

For himself, Bannock no longer wants to stay at the Grandwood. He will find a sturdy trunk/footlocker with a strong lock, and gather up all his belongings, and leave the Grandwood. He will take his horse, and Shadow, and find other lodging. Maybe ultimately a house in town, but he wants to make sure those still in good shape go to townsfolk who need them first. He will investigate if the Wheel Inn has an empty room that is still serviceable, and see if he can rent it. He will inquire with Lolm and Ciande if they have places to keep their horses still, and see if he can board his with theirs for the time being. In this way Bannock is trying to help the locals focus on getting back to normalcy, and trying to spread some coin around so folks have income for what they need.

During this time, Bannock will not be wearing his armor, no carrying his shield. He will keep most of his weapons and his armor locked up in his trunk. He will inquire in town about a bath, a haircut and shave, and see about finding a tailor to make some new clothes, in browns and whites, maybe with some yellow sun embroidery to honor Pelor. He will see if someone can make a matching vest of sorts for Shadow to wear around town as well. He will keep the Answerer with him, and it wants to be carried, but he will wrap it in cloth and secure it with straps, so that it is hidden from immediate view and would take some time to reveal and equip. He wants to be seen around town, but in a different light than before, and not so threatening to the locals.

He will also make available to all the small printer he used for Friends of Farweald handbills in the past for any who want to put up ads on the boards in the town square, offering or asking for anything.

Onarra agrees with Bannock on the points of wealth redistribution from Hravja's holdings. More in line with $ goes to town fund for all facets of rebuilding and supplying rather than trying to give every individual hard cash, which will only invite theft or loss in this time of chaos and distrust.

Establishing leadership from multiple interests is imperative, both to repel any subsequent attacks at our weakest, and to nurture the crumbling of animosities within Farweald from prejudice now that we have the mixed blessing of a common enemy/goal. We should urge Constable Tierny to choose from among willing NPCs that made a determined showing on the Day of Fire, himself included. A council representing law, commerce, and community at the very least (I forget who remains of the previous Council).
Akriah and Beltane approach Onarra and Miette, sympathetic toward the hostage situation they found themselves in. Beltane offers to perform a magical ritual that will completely sever any magical compulsions that The Master may have lay upon them.
When this gesture is made, Onarra will first insist on telling the tieflings of the twins' fate and their interactions with the efreeti as well as bringing them to where they lay at rest.

While with the tieflings, she will inquire if they need any assistance in safeguarding Querinsyru's son, who would certainly be a target of great interest for abduction or removal.

Onarra will otherwise busy herself where needed in getting Farweald rebuilt and defensible. Whatever druidcraft she can muster - as both a provider of clean food and water, and as a provider of minor healing arts - she will lend to Jareth and Quarion. Nights she will spend outside of town. When not resting in trance, she will keep watch at Farwealds least defensible position(s) (ruined gates, shattered walls, etc) or serve as escort for any hunters/foragers.

No one is left of the Council. Two are dead, one is revealed to be Hravja, who has fled Farweald. Constable Tierney is in temporary command of the town until a new Council is chosen. No one from town has really started thinking about that yet but they should, soon.

Onarra takes Akriah and Beltane aside to give them a full explanation of the Gwendolyn and Leigha's deaths. The tiefling sisters are upset, but agree that in the situation, the PCs certainly did not have all of the facts and made the best decision that they could under the circumstances. The tragic outcome is more the fault of Lord Shahzadeh, who killed them.

Akriah and Beltane would like to bury their sisters, though. Since their bodies are currently being preserved by Corellon's Shroud, there's no immediacy to burying them but it should be done in the next day or so.

Regarding hunters/foragers, Jareth and Bannock are probably going to lead a hunting/gathering party the following day. Onarra can certainly join. (Onarra wasn't originally asked because the person who brought it to Bannock and Jareth's attention didn't realize that Onarra was also 'woodsy'.)

That's a good idea, the town needs to get a handle on the survivors. Bannock can start organizing that with Constable Tierney.

Bannock easily finds five volunteers for a hunting party: two humans, two tieflings and a gnome. (Bannock, one of the humans is a guy from your private message).

You will all leave the following day.

The Wheel Inn has a three rooms for rent (out of 5 total). The proprietors are honored (and still a little intimidated, to be honest) to have Bannock stay there.

With Lolm's Livery and Ciande's Steeds both burned down, the two are combining forces with Jolgard's Drovers, in the southwest of town, to stable their horses. Jolgard's dealt mostly with transporting lumber from the lumber camps back to Farweald, and they have space for extra horses. Bannock can stable his horse there.

As for bathing and prettying up, everything is pretty smokey right now, and the two most popular Inns burned down. Most people are washing up in the Cold River, which runs through town, though that's starting to become a problem, too, as the river feeds the wells in town, which supply the drinking water.

As for new clothes, you can order them but they'll take a few days to be ready. I'll have to look up the tailor's name.

And Bannock can totally embark on a Redemption Tour around town. Everyone certainly notices Bannock's presence and although they all seem initially wary, as the minutes pass with no death threats, people seem to relax and accept his help. :)

While he is talking to folks in the town, both publicly around town and in private conversations, Bannock will be quick to point out the good actions and effectiveness of local townsfolk, like the constable and his deputies, the shopowners (whether or not they have interacted with Bannock in the past), etc., and just being sure to reassure folks that their town really is still in good hands.

Additionally, Bannock will point out his own rash behavior in the past, and the way he and his party were also taken in by Hravja, and be quick to forgive those who are worried their past deeds may make them outcasts in their community. He will focus on forgiveness for those who truly want to make amends, as he does.

That's very Pelor-ious of you, and right now most people are in shock over the events of the last 2 days, so your message is either being numbly accepted or just sliding right over their heads as some can't think of anything beyond getting a meal and figuring out where to sleep. But whether due to Bannock's influence or not (it totally is), you don't hear anyone talking about revenge or lynchmob-justice or anything like that.

Jareth agrees to help lead the hunting party

He pulls Onarra aside and requests her aid during the hunting expeditions. In particular, Jareth shares that he has agreed to escort the dragonling Cyvos on a hunt, as Beltane has relayed that the dragon it itching to spread its wings, as it were.

Jareth’s thoughts are to have Cyvos join one of the hunts - both to further acclimate the townsfolk with its presence, to broaden their appreciation for magical creatures, and to surround the young dragon with more friendly bows and axes should some mishap occurs during the hunt.

Once hearing Onarra’s reply, Jareth will approach Bannock about the dragon joining a hunting foray.
