Episode 22: Farweald Fixins

Post by EvilGenius »

The PCs have been making progress on the various tasks set for them by various people in Farweald.

First, the PCs were able to recover the remains of both of the 1/2 elven heroes who died fighting the released elemental creatures on the Day of Fire. The PCs were also able to recover Quickling, a Sorcerer's Stone (Pearl of Power that bestows the Quickened metamagic effect when you use the Stone to recover a spell slot).

Later that same night, the PCs went on a stealth mission to recover treasure and possibly dangerous magical items from the ruins of Councilor Lemend's home. The PCs snuck around the outside of Farweald's wooden palisade wall to enter by the North Gate, which was well lit and guarded by Deputy Archibald and 4 or 5 eager townsfolk armed with torches and pitchforks. The small group was very interested in the PCs, much to the chagrin of the stealthy types, although Bannock and Thulik quickly drew all of the attention to themselves. In fact, Bannock and Thulik were so successful in drawing attention to themselves that the PCs were quite sure no one at the gate would even remember there were other people with them.

While Bannock and Thulik went on a conspicuous 'patrol' of Farweald's North quarter, Brigga, Onarra and Nahala (the tiefling rogue), searched Councilor Lemend's barn for a secret safe that tiefling servants had reported. After searching several rooms, Onarra did find a small swivel plate that concealed a key hole. After she picked the lock, she was able to open a concealed trap door, exposing the top of a safe, set into the ground. Upon careful examination, Onarra determined that there was some sort of magical trap on the safe, along with a poisonous powder on the combination dial. Onarra was able to dispel the magical glyph and carefully bush away the poisonous powder before showing her expertise in safe cracking.

Inside of the safe the PCs found a spellbook with a glowing morphing rune, and two sacks of coin. Taking the treasure, the PCs retreated back to their small camp outside of the southeast walls of Farweald, reuniting with Quarion.

As per their arrangement, Onarra kept the book and Nahala took the sizable amount of coin and some minor golden jewelry.

Too late, Quarion realized that by not participating in the job, he wasn't entitled to an honest share of the booty and so the gold from Councilor Lemend's safe would not qualify for the Outlaw's Offering which is a traditional part of the funeral rites of Gadhelyn. However, after thinking about it for a bit, the PCs realized that they could still satisfy the requirements for the Funeral Feast by using a portion of the treasure recovered from the demonic basement under the Grandwood.

The PCs set back out for the Grandwood and recovered a heavy bag of coin with which they could begin to make preparations for the Funeral Feast.

Boccob's Encyclopedia
(Wondrous Item, Very Rare)
Image
This is a weighty spell book. It has a deep purple colored and in the middle of the front cover is a glowing silver rune that mysteriously changes shape while you watch it.
You open the book to find fine, thick vellum, and on the first page you see a spell description and formula. Strangely, as you examine it, the formula on the page seems to change itself until it seems that the spell inscribed is in your own personal notation! You could prepare this spell as though it were written by you in your own spellbook!
Boccob’s Encyclopedia is a great boon to Wizards. When a Wizard finds a spell (either an arcane spell scroll or a wizard’s spellbook), the Encyclopedia reveals a version of that spell in a format usable by its owner, without requiring any expenditure of gold or of time, and with no chance of failure.

Additionally, a wizard may choose to provide the standard time and cost of transcribing a spell into a spellbook (2 hours and 50gp per level of the spell, typically) to add an unknown spell to the book. While adding the unknown spell, the wizard enteres a trancelike state, which feels almost like being controlled by a celestial being. The wizard retains normal awareness of his/her surroundngs, and can choose to end the transcription early, if necessary. If the transcribing process is interrupted, all material costs are fully consumed and unrecoverable, but the process fails and the partial transcription fades from the pages of the Encyclopedia.

If the transcription process is completed, a new spell appears in the Encyclopedia. This new spell will be a spell that the transcribing character doesn’t know, and may be a unique spell, an arcane version of another spellcasting class’s spell, or merely an unknown standard spell. Whatever spell is entered into the Encyclopedia in this way may be cast as a ritual, even if it is not normally a ritual spell.

The Encyclopedia does not seem to have a limit on the number of spells that may be contained within it. However, when first discovered, the Encyclpedia will invariabley only have a few spells in it, if any at all.

If the Encyclopedia is passed to another spellcaster, most of the spells within fade within one round.

When found, the Encylcopedia will have 0-3 spells of 1-4th level in it.
Currently, the Encyclopedia contains Glyph of Warding (3rd) and Stoneskin (4th).

Quickling (Sorcer's Stone)
(Rare, requires attunement by a spellcaster)
Image
This pearl is a deep blue color and it vibrates strongly when you pick it up. You start to remark on it to your companions but your words all come out in a rush!
You can use an action to speak this pearl's command word and regain one expended spell slot of up to 3rd level. Once you have used the pearl, it can't be used again until the next dawn.

Secret: When you use the recovered spell slot to cast a spell, the Quicken meta-magic feat is applied to the spell.

Following up their successful recovery of dangerous magical items in the ruins of Farweald (dangerous in the wrong hands, at least), the PCs rested up, then set off on their critical hunting party.

Bannock gathered the five volunteers and he, Onarra, Thulik and Quarion set off to find some desperately needed game. A short distance outside of town, the PCs met up with Beltane, the tiefling priestess of Trithereon, who was shepherding her ward, the silver dragon wyrmling, Cyvos. After everyone was formally introduced to Cyvos and Beltane had wrung promises of protection from the whole hunting party, everyone made their way into the deeper forest.

Bannock led the way, easily steering the PCs to terrain that was likely to favor deer and possibly bears. The PCs found an area with rocky channels and a small herd of deer. Unfortunately, they also found several fierce owlbears and one gigantic brown bear! In the chaotic combat that followed, the PCs managed to slay all of the bears and deer, though the owlbears did some significant damage to the PCs, slew two of the Farweald hunters, and hurt Cyvos.

Luckily the PCs were able to revive one of the slain hunters before he bled out, and the other was brought back from the great beyond.

The PCs headed back to Farweald with over almost four thousand pounds of game animals.

Jon, you can chose which two of the hunters temporarily died in the combat. Those two will level up into 1st level characters, but the one who died all the way and had to be magically brought back to life will have developed a slight ... flutter. :) I'll leave that up to you as well.

Also, on the way back to Farweald, everyone is struggling to drag the carcasses back. Cyvos flies up to the PCs and lands to walk beside them. "So, umm, Beltane said you knew my father. She told me he was a navigator on ... some kind of freighter? I think that's a type of boat. Did you know him? Was he big? Was he wise? I bet he was the best silver dragon there ever WAS!! I sure wish I had gotten to meet him. Did you know him? Where did you meet him? Were you friends?"

The wrymling is practically prancing around you with the energy of his questions.

:)
