Nicoli Ivanov, or "Nickel" to his comrades, has been a mercenary all his life. His parents were both mercs, or so he was told. George,

In terms of Languages, the Battletech setting does not have too many really "special" languages; most are ones we are familiar with. Basic in this case would simply be English (or more precisely, American/Canadian English, especially as the Terran Hegemony dictators -- the McKennas -- were originally from Canada). But other languages, like Pakistani (widely spoken in the Lyran Commonwealth Bolan region), Indian (in the FedSuns Panpour region), Spanish (in the Free World League, especially in the Protectorate of Oriente), Greek (around the Marik Commonwealth worlds), Portuguese (Northern branch of the Lyran Commonwealth, especially in a number of worlds settled by Brazilians), Afrikaans, French (the "other" national language of the FedSuns), Hebrew (on Robinson in the FedSuns, since the ruling Sandovals are jewish), Russian (Terran side of the Capellan Confederation), Chinese (rest of the Confederation), Japanese (national language of the Draconis Combine.

And so forth...

The only language I can think of that is not spoken today is Swedenese, a fusion of Japanese and Swedish, spoken in the Combine occupied parts of the Rasalhauge Prefecture...

Damon.
