Spines and barrages
Spines and barrages are a set of squares equal to the width of the ship, extending forward and sideways, respectively, across the board.
This probably didn't impact us much, as the big ships didn't maneuver to the sides, and remained in the line of fire for attacks, but it does give a reason why you'd want to get those ships moving aside from giving fighters a bit of a jump start
Command Counters
Command Counter (1) and Command Counter (1-4) means that the capital ships have two counters, one that can be used with the Class I ship and another than can be used on any Class I-IV ship.
So basically we had an extra command counter that we could have been spending, which could have had an impact later in our second game.
