Dark City: Silver Flame - Return of the Entertainer (5/2)
Saga notes are online:
* The Return of the Entertainer

To follow-up on the events of this session, Thom will be asking around town for information regarding the Midnight's Turn mercenaries. He's assuming they're tied to the Entertainer, but he wants a better idea of where they originated from, if they've been in the city before, what inns/taverns they usually hung out at (if any).
Specifically, he'll go to the Dagger Down Inn, Fire-Eaters Inn and the Black Gulch. Also, he'll be looking for inns, taverns and bars that are frequented by residents of Blue when visiting the city (there must be some; I'm assuming there would be one or two in the Wharf District, but we've never detailed them). He figures finding out where the Blues hang out might be helpful tracking down information about The Entertainer, the Blue Thieves Guild, and other threats from that hive of villainy.

When he has a chance (and security lets up), he'll also be slipping into the Docks to try and learn more about the mystery ship. Some backup would be appreciated...

The information on Midnight's Turn is surprisingly fairly easy to come by as they set up a new office in Blue a few months ago.
The mercenaries were established years ago, though they only gained their infamy during the Greyhawk wars. In true mercenary fashion they worked for the highest bidder, but conducted all business in the middle of the night. On several occasions this lead to the group to show up on the opposite side of the field in the morning.
Recently the group set up an office in Blue. While some agents work within the city, many more simply pass through to gain a new job.
Tom is also able to find out that they've only been in Obsidian Bay for about 6 weeks. Most of that time they were only seen in the Wharf district and the docks. In the past week however, they were also seen hanging around the Messenger's Guild Offices.

Gruffudd will be taking Launce back to his folks to smooth things over there. He will of course tell them the whole truth, but also put in that he has no hard feelings for the youth, who was obviously duped by an incredibly charismatic and diabolical foe. Gruffudd will go so far as to ensure he is still enrolled at the Academy and gets special rapier training for the boy from one of the light weapon specialists at the Academy, if he still wants it. The idea being trying to redeem the boy. Gruffudd will even speak on his behalf to the authorities, to ensure that he is not harshly punished for those who used him as their patsy.
As for Midnight's Turn, the Blue's thieves guild, and the Entertainer, Gruffudd will let those of his aquaintences who are better skilled at Gather Info and Sneaking Around investigate the Docks and other things, and he will wait for them to request his aid once they've figured out a thing or two.

After some discussion between the authorities and Launce's father, while taking into account Gruffudd's words, an agreement is made. Launce is to continue his studies at the Academy for the remainder of the year. At the end of the year he will then serve one year in the Army of Obsidian Bay. This will be his penance for associating with the illegal arena. Launce agrees to this as well, and apologizes to Gruffudd before leaving with his father.
I will leave the Edgar/Promethean meeting for Ken.

Gems are essentially "same as cash"... but try getting a barkeep to give you change if you use one to buy ale... we've never really been too concerned with finding a buyer to convert them to coin, and as long as you're buying a big ticket item, like full plate, it probably wouldn't matter much to pay partially or entirely in gems.

Yeah, that stuff isn't gems, but conspicuously like stuff looted from some rich dude's mansion... and thus it would raise a few eyebrows with law-abiding folk regardless of how we came by it. Informing the authorities of our finds and then legally claiming the right of salvage (if such a law exists in OB) would be Fawke's preferred manner of handling it... maybe there is a waiting period where public notice is given, and if no proven claimants come forward describing the loot, then its ours to keep.

Thom does know a guy:Hardcorhobbs wrote:Is that something you want me to do? Or by the evil glint in your eye I think you have something in mind. Though... Thom is probably the man for the job...

But he's not the most reliable sort. You could create a fence (or fine arts dealer) of your own if you like (and have time).
