Microsoft is ridiculous!
I have, right now sitting in my inbox, one email from microsoft that says my xbox live gold subscription has been canceled... and one that says it's been renewed. I called customer support and they gave me a answer about the price increase that made no sense to me. Apparently the cancellation email was to inform me that the subscription price is increasing??!?!
Re: Microsoft is ridiculous!
I needed to call the Xbox support line today for another topic, and there was an automated message apologizing for the weird emails and stating that there will be no interruptions of service.
On a similar topic, some of you may have received emails in late August offering a discount on your next year's membership of Live before the price hike. My particular membership was due on Nov 1st, and the email had said I could get my next year for $39.99, and that the offer would expire on Nov 1st.
I set myself a reminder to renew my membership this week, but due to the recent changes on xbox.com, the links were all borked and broken and I couldn't get to the $39.99 deal. If any of you are in the same boat, just call their hotline at (800) 469-9269 and they will get you fixed up.
Microsoft's Xbox division, thankfully, is one of the few companies still doing customer service hotlines right. They answer promptly, you get a cheery, English-speaking, American operator, and they take very good care of you. I've had to call them 3 or 4 times over the years, and this has always been the case.

I will note that my company still outsources customer service to India. I imagine it is frustrating for customers, but also for us, since I tend to tell them to just transfer the customer, and I'll handle it...

I bought a prepaid card from amazon for 39.99. I think that may have entered into all this craziness...
