Worlds Finest

Post by EvilGenius »

News from ComicCon is that Batman will be in the Man of Steel Sequel, then there will be a stand-alone Flash movie after that, then they will launch Justice League. :)

And Avengers 2 will be Age of Ultron. And, well, lots of other stuff. It is Comic-Con, after all.

And so apparently they've decided to be completely stupid about this and make a version of Batman Vs Superman ala Dark Knight Returns. That is the decidedly WRONG way to introduce a Batman/Superman theme. Pitting two of the three pinnacle DC characters against each other was edgy and exciting in the 80s because there was such a long history of Bats and Supes being best friends. AND Miller wrote a story with drama and social commentary and pitted the two against each other as a metaphor for larger social issues which were set up over several issues.

Given that this Superman franchise is a reboot and the Batman will probably be a reboot and not a continuation of the Nolan Batman, it's WAY early for such a confrontation to have any real gravitas.

I agree -- Dark Knight Returns is a bad storyline for a Superman/Batman matchup. Don't get me wrong -- I enjoy the story -- but you're right, it's something that you do *after* you've established their friendship and the larger DC universe. I'd rather have seen something from the Batman/Superman title; any of those storylines would have done (though I suppose they already mined the best of those for the one-shot cartoon movies).

I don't know that I agree that this would be horrible. Sure, DKR may not be the best choice, but if instead it comes out like the Supes/Bats relationship at the beginning of JLA in the New 52, where they are enemies until they learn to trust each other, it could be done really successfully, I think.

You can just stop there in that sentence. No qualifiers needed. :P

I saw Man of Steel last night. I enjoyed it. Darker than I was expecting, and the final battle in Metropolis was pointless destruction porn, but far better than Green Lantern and in keeping with the visual design of the recent Batman Trilogy.

That was a good read, and I certainly can't argue any of it.
